Jantar mantar is an extraordinary, exceptionally strange tourist place in Delhi. It is amongst the best wonders in India. It is situated at Parliament Street, very close to Connaught Place. Its name itself creates a curiosity in minds as Jantar means 'instrument' & mantar here refers to calculation, so Jantar mantar means an instrument for calculation.
This Jantar Mantar observatory an extremely wonderful sightseeing place in Delhi, was masterminded by maharaja Jai Singh 11 of Jaipur in year 1724. It is believed that he learned all known observatories of ancient time, before designing the Jantar mantar.
Jantar Mantar is made up of 14 geometric devices used for forecasting weather changes, finding extraterrestrial altitude, measuring time and predicting behavior of planets.
As you enter Jantar mantar premises, a kind of inquisitiveness will make you excited to know more and everything about this ecstatic wonder. It has 6 instruments. Largest among them is SAMRAT YANTRA also called as the "king of instrument". This gigantic Jantar mantar sundial is made of an inclined wall parallel to the earth's axis, placed by 2 semi-circular quadrants. Moving to the left you will observe SHATHAMASA YANTRA, built of 2 big graduated arcs
Towards south is JAI PRAKASH YANTRA,' light of jai', named after Jai Singh, which is used to locate the position of sun and other heavenly bodies, is made up of 2 concave hemispherical structures. Then there is RAM YANTRA, used to study vertical and horizontal angles.
Mistra yantra, spade shaped structure is very famous symbol of Jantar mantar. It includes 5 instruments, each for different purpose, i.e. nitya chakra which is used to indicate meridian of 4 location across the globe, through Notkey (Japan), Greenwich, Zurich and Seri chew. Others are DAKSHINOTTARABHITTI YANTRA, KARKA RASIVALAYA and AGRA YANTRA
In this structure which is built of stone and marble, you can explore the mystery of old Indian way of astronomical forecasting. Interestingly you can observe scale marking inscribed to take the readings
